Brief Description or Review
Date added:
Rural By Design / Randall Arendt, 1994
Nate Riggle
Rural by Design advocates creative, practical land-use planning techniques to preserve open space and community character. Topics range from sewage disposal and farmland preservation to greenway planning for interconnected open space and the design of rural subdivision streets. The book includes numerous case examples of residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects that have used these innovative design techniques. And it takes an in-depth look at the design elements of the traditional town—and how to reinvent those elements in today's communities. (This book can be purchased from the American Planning Association.)

The Lorax / Dr. Seuss
Nate Riggle
"UNLESS someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not." (Available at the Pima County Public Library, Amazon.com, and other booksellers.)

Green Development / Rocky Mountain Institute Nate Riggle
Subtitled "Integrating Ecology and Real Estate"
From the back cover: "What's good for the Environment is good for business. Environmentally responsible real estate development makes dollars and sense. Green Development describes an exciting new field in which environmental considerations are viewed as opportunities to create fundamentally better buildings and communities -- more comfortable, more efficient, more appealing, and ultimately more profitable." (This book can be purchased from Rocky Mountain Institute and other booksellers.)

Higher Density Development: Myth and Fact
 / Urban Land Institute

Nate Riggle
A collaborative effort of the National Multi Housing Council, Sierra Club, American Institute of Architects, and ULI, this publication considers and dispels eight myths about higher density development. Emphasis on higher density; it needn't mean giant buildings, and it needn't even occur in Rincon Valley. But support of higher density development, even if only in other areas, could help to relieve the pressure for rampant growth in Rincon Valley. It is available free of charge at ULI's web site. There are also two companion Microsoft® Powerpoint® presentations.

Designing the Future / Vernon Swaback
Nate Riggle
A positive vision for the future in which the natural and built environments are each made more beautiful by the presence of the other. It presents an alternative to the present polarity between development and preservation. (This book is available at the Pima County Public Library.)
